FG Moves To Reduce Female Out-Of-School Children Prevalence
In a bid to reduce the number of female out-of-school children in Nigeria, the Federal Government, in partnership with the World Bank under the ‘Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment,’ launched a national campaign to advocate increased access, retention, and completion of secondary education for adolescent girls in Nigeria.
This was indicated in a statement made available to The Tide source last Thursday.
The campaign tagged ‘Madubi’, – a Hausa word which signifies Mirror forms a huge part of the AGILE project currently being implemented in some states across the country including Borno, Ekiti, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi and Plateau.
Earlier flagged off by President Muhammadu Buhari on 16th February 2023, the main objective of the AGILE project is to reduce the gender gap in secondary education completion rates and labour market transition among adolescent girls between the ages of 10 to 20 years. The project aims to benefit 21.5 million direct and indirect beneficiaries.
“Speaking to critical stakeholders and journalists at a media engagement session in Abuja last Thursday, the National Project Coordinator of the AGILE project, Amina Buba Haruna, said, “The AGILE project seeks to eliminate the barriers to knowledge experienced by girls in targeted areas. By scaling investment in girls’ secondary education. It offers a window to tackle other problems such as poverty, child marriage, maternal and child mortality, and gender-based violence.”
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state. According to him, constructive media engagement remains essential in creating public awareness on educational reforms, students’ welfare, infrastructural improvements, and other interventions being implemented by the state government.
