Flair For Writing, Necessity For Journalism
Flair for writing has been identified as an elixir for the practice of journalism.
Deputy Group News Editor, Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (RSNC), Sogbeba Dokubo, made the assertion during a Facility Visit of the Pinewood Montessori School to the Corporation in Port Harcourt, recently.
Dokubo noted that good journalism thrives when there is flair for writing and stressed the need for students to cultivate the writing habit from the early age.
She said “if you don’t know how to write, you cannot be a Journalist. This is because after covering an event, you have to self-edit it and make it a readable piece. So, if you don’t have the flair for writing, you cannot be a Journalist.
“So, for some of you who have indicated interest to become Journalists when you grow up, it is a good thing”.
Dokubo insisted that the journalism profession exposes one to stakeholders in the society as well as provide national and international travel opportunities.
In her words, “it is the only profession that allows you access to all the stakeholders that others in other profession don’t have access to. If you are a Journalist, you can access even the President of Nigeria just with your identification (ID) card.
“As a Journalist too, you can also travel outside the country for international conferences and news coverage just with what you have written or covered.”
While noting that Journalists are the watchdogs of the society, the Deputy Group News Editor encouraged the young pupils “who have flair for writing and interested in journalism to read wide because the society is always looking up to you.”
