NSCDC Denies Involvememt In IPMAN Member’s Arrest
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Rivers State Command, has said it has no hands in the arrest of a member of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) as speculated in some quarters.
This was part of the clarification by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr Olufemi Ayodele, made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
It noted that the purported arrest circulating in the media space was not only misleading, but amounts to an attempt to denigrate the service and the positive impact it is making in the society.
Such, according to the statement, was calculated to change public perception about the Rivers State Command and dent the image of the Corps and the reputation it has built with dedication, diligence and commitment.
It stated further that such “will not deter the Command from carrying out its mandate of safeguarding all Critical National Assets and Infrastructure as revealed by our unrelenting war against oil theft, pipelines vandalism and illegal dealings in petroleum products in Rivers State”.
Recall that the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had earlier directed the immediate reconstitution of the Antivandal unit nationwide and the process is ongoing.
The Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, had also talked tough while addressing the top management of the Corps and State Commandants nationwide.
He stated that the Federal Government expressed serious displeasure on oil theft, saying “it requires drastic measures by the Corps in order to protect the major revenue base of the country”.
NSCDC further described that report as prejudicial, misleading and unprofessional to have alleged that a member of IPMAN was threatened, arrested and detained without verification.
The statement emphasised that NSCDC, Rivers State Command, has over the years built a reputation and unbroken record of massively arresting and prosecuting oil thieves, while proceeds of contents impounded are remitted to the Federal Government coffers.
