LG Chairman To Focus On Infrastructure Dev
The Southern-Ijaw Local Government Council in Bayelsa, says it has concluded plans to strengthen provision of infrastructure in the area to stem the drift of youths to urban centres.
The Chairman of the Council, Chief Tiwei Orunimigha, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Yenagoa, on Sunday.
He said that the council would also intensify efforts towards providing education, healthcare facilities and other amenities to the people.
Orunimigha disclosed that the council recently awarded contracts for the construction of a modern market and an auto park at Amassoma, a landing jetty and a concrete walkway at Diebu.
Other projects embarked upon by the council, he added, included the renovation of a primary school building at Ikebiri and the construction of a cottage hospital at Koluama.
“The projects are expected to be completed before the end of the year,” he said and announced that the council had concluded arrangements to float a transport scheme.”
He said that the transport scheme was to assist students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ekowei and to ameliorate the transport challenges confronting people in the area.
Orunimigha called for understanding and co-operation between the legislative and executive arms of the local government and expressed concern at the evasion of tax by multinational companies operating in the area.
He urged the companies to partner with the council and their host communities for accelerated development.
While assessing some ongoing projects in the area, he commended the contractors handling the 1,000 capacity town hall at Olugbobiri and a police post at Tebidaba, on the level and quality of work done.
He assured that the council would release funds to the contractors without delay to ensure early completion of the projects.
