NEMA Advocates Tree Planting To Check Rainstorms
The National Emergency management Agency (NEMA) has advised communities threatened by desertification to plant more trees in their surroundings to check wind and rainstorms.
A statement issued by MEMA’s Head of Public Relations, Alhaji Yushau Shuaibu said the Director-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi, gave the advice in Ilorin while presenting relief materials to victims of the recent windstorm in the state.
It said Sani-Sidi who was represented at the occasion by a director in the agency, Mrs Clementine Aisueni, stressed the need to rekindle forestation programmes as well as discourage deforestation, especially bush-burning and unfriendly environmental practices.
According to the statement, NEMA has responded promptly to the disaster in the state by dispatching an assessment team to inspect the affected communities and make recommendations on provision of relief materials to victims.
It said NEMA gave the victims various items, including building materials, household materials as well as raw foods.
The statement said that the Special Adviser on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, who responded on behalf of the government, commended NEMA for its timely intervention and contributions toward alleviating the suffering of victims.
It said that Musa further requested for more assistance from NEMA to the state in view of the re-occurrence of natural disasters.
