Maersk Urges Collaboration Among Stakeholders
Mr Ivan Haesom-Green, Chief Executive Officer of Maersk Line in Africa, yesterday charged shipping lines and maritime stakeholders to seek “sustainable collaborations”that would enhance the development of nation’s maritime industry.
Haesom-Green, who is also the Managing Director of Safmarine Ltd, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that collaboration would enable the experts to brainstorm on the best ways to create a value added Nigerian maritime industry.
He suggested an urgent meeting of all maritime stakeholders to seek ways of decongesting the Apapa Port and linking the nation’s flagship port with others across the nation.
According to him, there is a need for stakeholders to deliberate on how to provide and improve the infrastructure such as roads and power as well as dredge the lagoons that link the ports. “For the maritime sector to grow, infrastructure must be put in place to enable the effective berthing of vessel and good distribution of cargoes.
He said that Maersk Line would continue to bring big vessels to Nigeria and contribute to the development of the maritime industry and the economy.
“Maersk Line will continue to ensure that the Nigerian importer and exporter benefit from whatever initiative the Maersk Line embark upon,” he said.
It will be recalled that Maersk Nigeria Ltd recently deliver a vessel laden with 4,500 containers at the APM Terminal Apapa, Lagos.
According to him, the key behind the launch of the new vessel has been to increase the direct capacity from a greater number of ports.
He said that the idea was to increase port capacity, increase government revenue and create employment in the long run.
