Show Commitment To End Insurgency, Wike Tasks Buhari

Published

on

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate his commitment to fight the war against insurgency and insecurity.
Amidst prevailing insecurity in the country, the governor has reiterated the call for State police to boost internal security.
Wike, who stated these during an interview on Channels Television, yesterday night, declared that no government can provide good governance when if it fails to protect life and property.
“The issue of security is paramount in governance and when a government cannot protect life and property, then that government has failed. There is no two ways about it. There is no propaganda that can solve the problem.”
Wike, noted one of the reasons why insurgency, banditry, cultism and other heinous crimes besetting Nigeria have continued to fester is because the Federal Government have failed to admit they lack the capacity to tackle these security challenges bedeviling the country.
“The President of the country has not shown enough strength to say I am willing to fight this insurgency; I am willing to fight insecurity problem in this country. As a leader, when people see you are willing to do something, I can tell you, you will see that people will come out and give him their best.”
The governor said there is nothing wrong with the Federal Government admitting they have obviously failed in the protection of life and property and that they need support ideas to tackle the prevailing insecurity across the country.
He said it was heart-wrenching to hear the governor of Niger State, who is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), lamenting how the Federal Government’s nonchalance to the security challenge in his state paved way for Boko Haram to overrun over 50 communities.
The Rivers State governor described as pathetic, incessant cases of kidnapping, banditry and murder of innocent civilians and soldiers.
According to him, “I think the Federal Government is not interested in the protection of life and property of Nigerians.”
He said there will be nothing wrong if President Buhari-led Federal Government should seek help from countries like the United States of America, China, United Kingdom and others that have faced and solved similar security challenges.
“If you are incapacitated, there is nothing wrong asking for help from people who have the capacity, who have what it takes to solve such problem. You don’t need to shy away because Nigeria is an independent sovereign country and therefore as a president of a country, you don’t need to seek help from outside.”
The governor called for procurement of requisite equipment that will enable the military and other security agencies to effectively tackle insecurity in the country.
“If you listen to the security men they will tell you they lack equipment, they lack what it takes to fight terrorists or insurgents. They will tell you that look, we don’t have the equipment.”
The governor maintained that the prevailing insecurity across the country was a pointer to the salient fact that the country urgently requires state police to tackle terrorism.
Wike also stated that the reason why the APC-led government does not want the National Assembly to amend the Electoral Act and for the President to assent to it, is because they are not prepared to ensure a free, fair and credible election in 2023.
He declared that with the prevailing disenchantment in Nigeria over the maladministration that has characterised the APC rule, it is obvious to the party that Nigerians will overwhelmingly vote against them, hence, they are frustrating any electoral reform that will make the 2023 polls credible.
Commenting on the petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike, said the petition which he opposes should never be misconstrued for crisis in the PDP.

Guterres Backs Nigeria’s Bid For UN Security Council Seat …Hails Tinubu’s Reforms, Regional Security Role

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has charged Nigeria with spearheading Africa’s quest for a restructured global order, describing the country as uniquely positioned to lead the continent toward superpower status.

Guterres, who backed Nigeria’s bid for the world body’s security council seat, also praised the economic reforms of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as well as Nigeria’s leadership in stabilising the Sahel and ECOWAS regions, despite facing its own security challenges.

The UN scribe made the remarks last Friday night during a high-level bilateral meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking during the meeting, Guterres said Nigeria’s large population, sustained democratic governance, vast natural and human resources, and longstanding commitment to multilateralism placed it in a unique position to lead Africa in the evolving global order.

“Given Nigeria’s demographic strength, democratic continuity and deep resource base, the country stands a real chance of leading Africa to becoming the next superpower in the evolving global architecture,” he said.

The UN Secretary-General and the vice president discussed key developments in Nigeria and the country’s expanding leadership role in promoting regional stability across West Africa and the Sahel.

Guterres commended the remarkable and outstanding reforms of the administration of President Tinubu, noting that Nigeria’s bold economic restructuring and security commitments have strengthened its continental standing.

The meeting focused on strengthening Nigeria–UN collaboration to advance global economic growth, peace and security, sustainable development, and a coordinated humanitarian response across Africa.

In his remarks, Shettima thanked the UN Secretary-General for his leadership in advancing global peace, noting that Africa has benefited immensely from his tenure, even as the United Nations undergoes internal restructuring.

“We remain committed to multilateralism and to deepening our partnerships with the United Nations and other global institutions,” the vice president said.

Shettima also reiterated Nigeria’s longstanding call for comprehensive reform of the United Nations system to reflect evolving global realities.

He emphasised that Africa must have stronger representation in global decision-making structures and declared that Nigeria deserves a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation, with Guterres reaffirming the UN’s support for Nigeria’s reform agenda and its growing leadership role in advancing peace, security, and development across Africa.
