Klopp Threatens To Quit Germany If
Jurgen Klopp started his reign as Germany’s head coach by threatening to quit if the media invades his family’s privacy.
The former Liverpool manager was appointed on a four-year deal on Friday to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned this month after Germany’s shock World Cup defeat by Paraguay in the last 32.
But the 59-year-old issued a warning to the media as he held his first news conference as Germany’s head coach.
“If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace then I’ll be gone, I’ll just turn away,” Klopp said.
“I know there are other countries where national team coaches are treated even worse.
“I’m not doing this job for myself, I’m doing it for you. I’m taking this job even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel.
“I love this job but I am always ready to call it quits if need be.”
Both Nagelsmann and England boss Tuchel came under media scrutiny after their exits from the World Cup, with Tuchel criticised for his defensive tactics and substitutions as the Three Lions let slip a 1-0 lead in their semi-final defeat by Argentina.
Klopp’s appointment was widely expected for weeks and his contract will see him through to the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
“Jurgen Klopp is not going to have any career after the national team,” he added.
“This is the pinnacle, the absolutely high point of my footballing career as coach. I will give everything I have got.”
It is Klopp’s first coaching job since ending his nine-year tenure at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after “running out of energy”.
He said he feels the time is right for his return to coaching and to take up his first role in international football.
“Over the last few days it was almost like a movie happening to myself,” he said.
“I have always surmised the job of Germany head coach is really big but now it is really dawning on me what being the national team head coach is all about.
“For many, many years it was unimaginable for me to assume this position. As the years went by, it became more or less evident that sooner or later I would be asked to do this job.
“Now I think the time is right.”
His first game in charge will be against the Netherlands in a Nations League group-stage match on 24 September.
IOC Declines To Investigate FIFA President (1)
The International Olympic Committee has said it will not investigate Gianni Infantino as a complaint about the Fifa president is outside its scope.
Human rights campaign group FairSquare complained to the IOC that Infantino had breached its charter by failing to adhere to rules on political neutrality “through statements or other clear expressions of support for the US president”.
US President Donald Trump admitted during the World Cup that he had called Infantino to ask him to review a red card given to US striker Folarin Balogun.
The forward was expected to miss his side’s last-16 tie against Belgium after being sent off during their 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
But, after the intervention from Trump the one-match ban was suspended for 12 months. No reason was given, beyond citing a rule that allows punishments to be suspended.
Balogun started the match, which Belgium won 4-1.
Infantino has been a member of the IOC since 2020.
Section two of the Olympic charter states: “Members of the IOC will not accept from governments, organisations, or other parties, any mandate or instructions liable to interfere with the freedom of their action and vote.”
The IOC said the complaint against Infantino fell outside the jurisdiction of its ethics commission.
“The current complaint, with regard to the Fifa president, refers only to the international federation’s decisions on its governance and its management, including its relations with government, and to the international federation’s implementation of the rules of its sport, which are both outside the scope of application of the IOC code of ethics,” it said.
The IOC statement came a day after it emerged the Norwegian Football Federation was considering filing a formal complaint to Fifa’s ethics committee about the decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic one-match ban.
In a statement provided to Tidesports source, NFF president Lise Klaveness said the federation had reacted with strong concern and a decision on whether or not to make a complaint would be made at its next board meeting.
The federation has already filed a complaint about Fifa’s first Peace Prize being awarded to Trump.
Chelsea In Search Of New Set-Piece Coach (2)
Chelsea are in talks to sign highly regarded set-piece coach Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa but face competition from other Premier League clubs as well as Saudi Pro League teams.
Villa would be due compensation for MacPhee with his contract understood to have a specified release clause.
The Scottish coach, 46, has combined his role at Villa Park with a similar position with the Portugal national team for the past five years under Roberto Martinez, who resigned after the World Cup.
Villa scored more goals from set-pieces than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues during the 2023-24 season.
They followed that by ranking among the top five a season later and finished joint-top with Arsenal in the Premier League last season.
MacPhee would be one of a number of staff members to leave Villa Park this summer after helping the club win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League under manager Unai Emery.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has space in his current backroom staff as previous set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva, who joined from Brentford for £750,000 in 2024, is moving away from a touchline role and into a more behind-the-scenes position.
Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m this week, with Alejandro Garnacho moving in the other direction on an initial loan that will likely become permanent through an option to buy.
Boxing: Joshua Survives For Date With Fury (4)
Anthony Joshua suffered two knockdowns, the first happening after just 20 seconds, before recovering to dramatically stop Kristian Prenga in the second round of his comeback fight in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The British heavyweight was fighting for the first time since surviving the December car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
He was sensationally rocked by a huge uppercut from underdog Prenga in the opening round, and then hit the canvas again later in the round.
At that point he looked on the verge of one of the biggest shock defeats in heavyweight history, with the long-awaited Tyson Fury fight hanging by a thread.
But Joshua produced one of the greatest escapes of his career, and now that fight is on.
He unleashed his right hand in the second round, with the final shot sending Albanian Prenga crashing down and forcing the referee to halt the contest.
“It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough,” Joshua, 36, said.
He choked up and stepped away from the microphone, before adding: “It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”
There had been speculation fellow Briton Fury might make a appearance despite insisting he would not attend.
But the master of mind games stayed true to his word, with Fury nowhere to be seen barely 24 hours on from his own warm-up win over Mariusz Wach in Thailand.
“I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person, we’re here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat,” Joshua said about the prospect of fighting Fury.
Contracts have been signed, but the venue and date for a fight more than a decade in the making are still unknown.
This chaotic night, however, belonged to Joshua in a victory forged through adversity during the most difficult months of his life.
Given the circumstances, this was never going to be a straightforward return for Joshua. Few, however, could have predicted the drama that unfolded inside six minutes.
Joshua carried the names of Ghami and Ayodele on his chest and walked to the ring alongside his entire team in a quiet show of unity. The canvas carried their names too, alongside the words ‘My Brother’s Keeper’.
His comeback could scarcely have begun in any worse fashion. Just 20 seconds in, a right uppercut from Prenga sent Joshua crashing to the canvas and stunned the arena.
Joshua smiled as he climbed to his feet. Prenga, who arrived with 20 knockouts from his 20 victories but little profile even with boxing’s hardcore followers, sensed an opportunity.
Promoter Eddie Hearn barked instructions from ringside, while Joshua stablemate Oleksandr Usyk watched on with a look of concern.
A left uppercut later in the round dumped Joshua on the canvas again. He was still unsteady at the start of the second round and appeared to be there for the taking, but Prenga surprisingly began to box off the back foot and let the Watford fighter off the hook.
Joshua capitalised and using his years of experience, and perhaps the emotion, he drew Prenga on to a jab before uncorking a crushing right hand. More rights followed as Prenga collapsed to the canvas and the referee had seen enough.
This was 35-year-old Prenga’s second loss in his career.
It was Joshua’s first test against a recognised professional opponent since Daniel Dubois stopped him in September 2024.
His only fight since had come against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in December, 10 days before the fatal crash that left him injured.
Joshua passed the Prenga test, but not in the manner anyone expected. It was not the destructive, free-flowing champion who once swept opponents aside.

Neebe who was represented by the Deputy Rector, Academics, Dr Alapuye Eleki described the competition as one of the best organized so far by the institution.
He said this was made possible by the inclusion of all sporting events, stressing that the situation gave students of the polytechnic the opportunity to showcase their sporting talents.
The Rector also commended the students and officials for their mature behaviour through out the duration of the competition
It would be recalled that the Rector, while declaring opened the competition had announced the expansion of the expansion of the competition with the inclusion of athletic events in the competition.
Neebe also said because of the changes , the competition will also be known as f “Rector’s Sports Competition instead of to Rector’s cup.
He said this was necessary to enable students of the institution showcase and development their talents in all round of sports as well as enable the school to raise a team for key sports competition in the country especially the forthcoming Nigerian polytechnic games coming up next year.
He described it as first of it’s kind in the history of the polytechnic
“The first of its kind, for the first time we are participating in all the sports and basic things. The purpose of doing this is to increase participation, before now it used to be only football lovers but football, though the king of all sports is not the only sport, there are other sports and students with skills in this other sports have been left out previously so this year we decided to carry everyone along.
“Either you’re a participant in one game or sports or the other or you are a lover and admirer of another game or sports and this is why we decided to do it this way.
“And for the first time too we are extending this for a period of two weeks, previously it used to be one week now it is two weeks.
“The reason is because we want everybody not only to watch but to come out and show your own skill in tht game or sport that you love so much”
The Rector said the change will also enable the polytechnic to put together a formidable team for the forthcoming Nigeria Polytechnic Games
“Our concern is that at the end of this competition we should be able to put one or two things together that will participate in this year’s Nigeria Polytechnic Games.
“This year’s Nigeria Polytechnic Games has been scheduled to hold at the Federal Polytechnic Bida sometime early next year and so from the participants here please coaches and officers of the ministry of youth and sports present, help us to identify the talents”
He said the institution’s annual competition has produced some talented sportsmen and women some of who are playing abroad and advised the students to take the event very seriously.
“I am proud to say that one or two members of this competition in the past are playing their football overseas, the ones that I know. And so, from those of you here today, and those that will play later, put in your best.
“Please, the name of the game is fair play. It is not a do-or-die thing. It is a competition, but not a war, not a competition of war. So, please play as friends, put in your best, show your skill, at the end, we’ll be proud of you.
“Whether you win or you lose, we are all one family. Thank you, thank you” he said
Also speaking the Director of Sports, Captain Elechi Amadi polytechnic,Dr Daye Barango described the inclusion of all sporting activities in the competition as a welcome development.
Barango said it would provide opportunities for students to develop their talents in all the sports”There is going to be changes, because this year we included athletics.”There is going to be 100 meters,200 metres,400 metres 800 metres 1500 meters
” We are also going to have javelin, discus and short put
“All these are in preparation for us to get our athletes for next year’s NIPOGA. We hope that from this year,we can get good athletes that will represent the school “
Barango said the school, a few years ago also introduced basketball volleyball and table tennis, adding “but this year is different because we have included athletes
“We are going to be better than what we had last year or previous years especially as we have new games coming in ,new sports coming in and the athletics”,he said.

NFF Gets Knocks, Described As Illegal
For many Nigerians the outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup did not matter much, the pain of not having been represented by the country’s flagship team, the Super Eagles have remained the sour point of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A former chairman of the League Management Company, now NPFL, Rumson Victor Baribote said it was unthinkable that Nigeria, the giant of Africa, was absent out of ten countries that represented Africa at the Mundial..”It is something I don’t even want to think about. For a team that once ranked fifth in the whole world, it was embarrassing not to have qualified for the World Cup. It is a shame. It is not something that should be remembered or even thought about.”
Baribote is not alone. Former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association(now NFF) Alhaji Sani Toro said, “It is unfortunate that we have failed to go to the World Cup in two consecutive editions. Our football has gone down and the government doesn’t seem to have the will to do anything about it.”
A former Nigeria international, Edema Fuludu echoed, “Every Nigerian football fan is still bitter that in two consecutive World Cups we did not attend. It shows that we need to do more, apart from just talking. We must work on the talk.” Working the talk, Fuludu insisted, means “the NFF must not go the former round where we just talk about going back to the drawing board when we don’t have a drawing board. Nigeria has to be in the next World Cup.” That means things must change. How does the change come about when the people who are resisting change are still in charge of affairs?
Corroborating Fuludu’s fears, Baribote said, “ If we were in a saner clime, those who are at the helm of affairs should have humbly stepped aside honourably and relinquished their positions, but not here.”
The bigger worry is that the Nigeria Football Federation has fixed September 26 for its elective congress which will produce a new executive. Almost all members of the present board want to return and campaigns are already in high gear. The campaign slogan of the NFF President Ibrahim Gusau is ‘continuity’
Toro said nothing will change as the September election has already been concluded. “This coming election is already concluded,” he told this writer. “They will only remove one or two people who do not agree with them. So don’t expect any change at the end of the election. The same people will come back.”
Asked if he was interested in the forthcoming election, Fukudu laughed it off. “Only a fool will throw his hat into the ring for a fight he knows he cannot win,” he said. “There is no level playing field,” he remarked, adding, “It’s good to be ambitious, but there is no level playing field. Under which platform will I be coming from? You must come from a platform which can give you some votes. Now there is a lot of inequality(imbalance) in the way votes are being given at NFF elections. That is what the players’ Union has been fighting. Let us have a level playing field so that knowledgeable people can willingly go to contest. As it is now, someone like Okocha or Odegbami can only get one vote if they want to contest. For instance, if I am coming from a state FA there is no way I can contest for the Presidency against the incumbent because he is on top of the FAs; where they have 36 votes plus. If I am coming from the players Union I will have only one vote, a coach has only one vote. So where is the fairness in it? That is the problem; no level playing ground. So it is not as if one doesn’t want to be ambitious. There is no fairness in the whole thing. Unless you are a fool, you can’t just throw your hat into the ring because you won’t get the vote required to win”.
Baribote assured that something can still be done to correct the imbalance in the voting pattern before the September election. He argued that the real actors who make football possible were being relegated in the running of their own affairs by those he termed as ‘outsiders’.
“If you look at a football match,” he began, “who are those that are the real actors on the pitch? The players, the referees and the coaches and here they don’t have the opportunity to manage their own affairs, while those that are not active are the people calling the shots. That is why we are having this problem.”
He continued, “out of 44 voting rights, the FAs get 36, with FCT it becomes 37. So, how can one unit produce a president at the expense of the other four? And even the League chairmen that are supposed to be elected, are appointed into office by the NFF board.
“Now the NFF just pick whoever they like and impose him on the clubs as League chairman, Who elected him? I was chairman of the league at the time, I was elected by the clubs.”
Baribote said FIFA recognizes that clubs elect or appoint their own person, not somebody coming to interfere. So, there’s a lot of illegality going on.
“Even in the Nigerian constitution, for you to be president, you must have at least two thirds of votes in a number of states. But in the Nigerian Football Federation, it’s only one unit, which is the state FAs, that elect instead of the collective mandate of all the stakeholders.”
Justifying his objection to the status quo, Baribote said, “Now, let me give you one simple analogy. For you to be a referee in Nigeria, to officiate games, you must have passed through training or a test of the Nigerian Referee Association, to qualify as an NRA member. To be a coach, you must have the minimum qualification of the NIS as a coach and to be a member of the players’ union, you must have played professionally. That is the qualification. Now tell me what qualifies the FA Chairmen? Nothing.”
Fuludu said, the fight to correct the imbalance has been on for long. “Even the Players Union led by Harrison Jalla had to go to court but some of us in the union decided not to go the same route and avoid the courts by talking to some stakeholders and people in the National Sports Commission. The so-called amendments made at the Extraordinary Assembly in Bayelsa were cosmetic. If anything, it shows that they still don’t want to provide a level-playing field. There is no verifiable change.”
We asked if it has become a helpless case? His answer was blunt. “It appears so, unless the government steps in and says, ‘enough of this. Let us have a comprehensive list and let no one threaten us with FIFA, so that people with real interest and good intentions for Nigeria football will come out to contest. Once they are assured of a level playing field, the best candidates will come out to contest”.
Toro who supervised one of the most successful eras of Nigerian football said the situation can only be rectified by the government. The NFF Statutes that appear so lopsided can be amended to reflect fairness and equal representation of stakeholders if the government stands firm. “It is easy to deal with and nobody should threaten us with FIFA sanctions. Unfortunately, the government has not demonstrated enough will to effect the desired change. The chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko said there will be changes but I think only a miracle can bring about this change.”
Baribote declared that the present board of NFF cannot be talking about another election when the election that brought them to power had been declared illegal by the Appeal Court.
Said he, “We shouldn’t be talking about whether they should come back because their being in office alone is illegal. There is a standing order given by the Court of Appeal dated 19th January, 2024 that nullified their election. They filed an appeal and the Court of Appeal on the 29th of September, 2022 gave an interim order when they looked at the propriety of their appeal and on January 19th, 2024, struck out their appeal and further directed the deletion of that appeal number from the court of appeal. Yet they are in office. We have filed contempt proceedings, we have filed for the enforcement of that order. They are still in office. So, you see that there is no legal mandate putting them in office because the election that put them there, in the first place, is still being challenged in the court of Appeal and they want to go ahead with another election because they have no respect for judicial pronouncements and the rule of law.
Like I said, one day a Moses will come that will take us to the Promise Land. So, we are on it, we are not going back. So, ordinarily, in the eyes of the law, they are not even known because their being in office is illegal.”
