Commissioner To Offset Athlete’s Medical Bills
Niger State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Emmanuel Umar, has promised to offset the medical bills of a physically challenged female athlete who represented the state in the just concluded 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF) in Edo.
Umar made this known on Monday during an interview with newsmen in Minna.
“We have to do everything possible to encourage our youth to develop their talents. As you can see Miss Victoria Joseph is deaf and dumb but she is not deterred by her condition but determined to excel in life.
“She was scheduled to undergo goitre surgery on her neck at the General Hospital in Minna before we went to the NSF in Edo.
“Against all odds this young lady suspended the surgery and went ahead to represent us. Therefore, I don’t think it is a bad idea to pay for her medical bills,” he said.
Umar said that such an athlete needed every support and encouragement to help make her a successful person in the society.
“Tomorrow she may be a national asset that will represent Niger state and the country, so there is the need to encourage her to develop her full potential,” he said.
Reacting, Joseph, who represented the state in 400 metres and 800 metres race (athletics) and finished fourth position was full of praises for the commissioner.
“I don’t have anything to give our commissioner than to always pray that God should protect and bless him.
“My God will continue to protect Umar and his family,” Joseph, who spoke through an interpreter, said.
The athlete said that after the surgery, she hoped to be in Asaba, Delta state for the forthcoming 21st edition of the 2022 NSF.
The 24-year-old Joseph who was born in Shiroro area of the state hails from Enugu State.
However, she said that she lost her mother at a tender age and her father had since relocated to Enugu.
Joseph appealed to the state government to give her a job to enable her cater for herself and focus on her sports career.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
