Edo: CSO Hails INEC Over Conduct Of Election
A Civil Society Organisation, CSO, Centre for Liberty, CFL, yesterday hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over conduct of the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday, September 19 2019.
The commendation was made in a statement signed by Co-convener, CFL, Ariyo Dare Atoye, and Co-convener, CFL, Adebayo Raphael, where they pointed out that initially there were issues of violence in 13 local government areas out of 18 during the pre-election campaigns in the state. The statement reads in part. “On Saturday, September 19, 2020, the good people of Edo State went to the polls to exercise their democratic right to vote, and did so peacefully and commendably. Despite the unfortunate flashes of violence in 13 of the 18 local government areas in the state during pre-election campaigns, the election was conducted in a mostly civilized and less disruptive manner across the state. This is highly commendable.
“CFL equally commends the general conduct of the various stakeholders in the election, from the permanent and ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to the various security agencies that participated in the election, especially the Nigerian Police Force for their vigilance and professionalism, the local and international election observers, and the political actors and civil society organizations.
“Although the election was mostly peaceful and free of disorder, there were reports and cases of overzealous loyalists of some political parties who tried to scuttle the election and create confusion. We believe that INEC and the Nigerian Police will do well to deal with the culprits as legally provided in the present Electoral Act, so as to continue to deter potential election disrupters from indulging in this ignoble act.
“CFL also commended the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, over the peace initiative he spear-headed with concern for a peaceful electoral atmosphere in order not to jeopardize the lives of the people, which also inspired the National Peace Committee to follow suit”.

Tinubu Flags Off 2027 Re-election Campaign In Kaduna
The campaign rally, held at the Kaduna Township Stadium, attracted Vice-President Kashim Shettima, APC governors, party leaders, federal and state lawmakers, political stakeholders and supporters from across the country.
The flag-off marks the beginning of the APC’s drive to secure a second presidential term for President Tinubu, with the party expected to promote its achievements, defend its economic reforms and outline its policy priorities under the proposed Renewed Hope 2.0 agenda.
Kaduna’s selection for the campaign launch underscores the strategic importance of the North-West, a region with a substantial voting population and considerable influence on presidential election outcomes.
The APC faces a significant challenge in Kaduna, where the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, defeated President Tinubu in the 2023 election. The rally therefore provides the ruling party an opportunity to strengthen its grassroots structures and regain electoral support in the state.
Addressing supporters, Vice-President Shettima appealed to Northern voters, highlighting President Tinubu’s political relationships with prominent Northern leaders, including Alhaji Abubakar, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Vice-President’s appeal reflects the APC’s determination to consolidate its support in the North as the party intensifies preparations for the presidential contest.
The Renewed Hope 2.0 agenda is expected to feature prominently in the campaign, providing a platform for President Tinubu to explain his administration’s economic policies and outline plans for another term.
However, the President’s record on economic reforms, rising living costs, petrol prices, employment, infrastructure and insecurity is expected to attract considerable scrutiny during the electioneering period.
