Leadership Crisis: Eket LG Secretariat Locked Up
Workers and members of the public have been locked out of the premises of Eket Local Government in Akwa Ibom following a face-off between the Council Chairman and Secretary.
The Tide’s source reports that the activities of the council have been grounded for one week as the offices of principal officers remained locked.
However, staff at the secretariat whose offices were locked reported for duty but were found in small groups discussing their fate.
The source learnt that the last meeting of the council leadership which deliberated on the appropriation of May revenue from the federation account ended in a stalemate which prompted the Chairman to lock up the council.
Some members of the Council leadership led by the Council Secretary Emman Abasiubong had proposed a severance allowance since the administration would end in June.
A source, who attended the meeting, said that the proposal for severance pay for political office holders in the council irked the chairman who accused the secretary of insubordination.
When contacted, the Council Secretary Abasiubong maintained that there was no crisis in the local government, but admitted that there was an internal disagreement between members of the cabinet regarding their allowances and entitlements.
“I am not aware of any crisis in Eket Local Government, we had our normal meetings on appropriation of available funds and the chairman flared up following demands for allowances as the terminal date of the administration is by the corner”.
“I have been going to work but unfortunately I have been locked out and I have been trying to get in touch with the chairman but he is not taking my calls,” Abasiubong said.
Rev Emmanuel Udoh, Chairman of Eket Local Government told our correspondent on telephone that there were moves to destabilise his administration led by the council secretary.
“The Council Secretary is interested in running for Chairmanship and has refused to resign as stipulated by law, that is why he is causing problems but I can assure you that there is no cause for alarm,” Udoh said.
