Fighting Menace Of Kerosene Scarcity
In recent times, the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan has been able to break the jinx of prevalent fuel scarcity in the country. Though there is a sigh of relief on the aspect of petrol, but there is gnashing of teeth by the teeming population of Nigerians who use kerosene as their major source of energy in everyday life.
The war is won on one side, the petrol. There is heavy silence by the government on the scarcity of kerosene that is tearing the common man apart in Nigeria. Kerosene is the commonest element of petroleum product. And ninety per cent of the Nigerian population use kerosene for so many uses like burning of stove for cooking, lighting in lantern or locally made lamp, setting fire on woods with the aid of matches.
Indeed, most of the canteens in the country use kerosene as energy to cook the food they sell to their customers. And when kerosene is scarce they find it difficult to meet the need of customers. The truth is that if they see kerosene to buy at that period of scarcity, they buy it exorbitantly, thereby making their customers to pay more for the food. And families find it hard to cook food for the house holders. The difficulties passed through by Nigerians are enormous as a result of prevalent kerosene scarcity in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have died in course of searching for kerosene.
Nigeria is one of the largest producers of petroleum products in the world, not in Africa. But the irony is that why do we suffer for what we produce as a nation? Cars are costly commodity, but in countries where cars are produced or manufactured they are cheap compare to what we purchase here as buyers.
There was heavy noise making when petrol was scarce. The high and mighty complained and the government saw reason to improve in the production and distribution to the people. Nigerians are suffering everyday as a result of kerosene scarcity and nobody seems to pay rapt attention to it, why?
Winning the battle over petrol does not mean that those who use kerosene everyday should be left out from the plan of government. It is high time the present administration come out openly to fight incessant scarcity of kerosene to a standstill situation. It is pathetic to see filling stations selling petrol everyday but kerosene once in a blue moon. Kerosene has become a product to be bought only from the black market and no longer from the filling stations.
Indeed, a bottle of kerosene is costlier than a bottle of beer. Most Nigerians are tired of complaining and trekking for miles in search of kerosene that is produced in Nigeria, is it that somebody is hoarding the product to create artificial scarcity in order to make quick money from the innocent Nigerians?
Time has come for the government both state and federal to do something about this ugly trend of scarcity of kerosene, in this modern times. So far that the government is winning the battle in some sectors, this kerosene issue should also be won or brought under control.
The filling stations should be made functional in the selling of kerosene. The government can make it work if they want to. The marketers must be made to know their service to Nigerians. There must be Nigerian dream above the sale of kerosene to Nigerians.
The predicament of kerosene scarcity is a terrible night-mare for those who use the product. It is obvious that Nigeria is the producer of kerosene. And if that is a fact, Nigerians need not to gnash their teeth before they use it. Nigerians should be proud of what they produce.
Fighting the menace of kerosene scarcity in Nigeria, the government at various levels should monitor the distribution of kerosene. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), should as a matter of urgent attention, increase quantity of kerosene distribution to Nigerians. Border must be checked to avoid the hijacking of the product to neighbouring countries, which cause untold hardship on Nigerians. Government should also pay more emphasis on the refining of kerosene as it is to other petroleum products. Filling stations which siphon kerosene to deny Nigerians the joy of using the product should be closed down Government should sanction filling stations which go against the vision of the government with the use of approved agency.
Indeed, Nigerians need kerosene. Government agencies involved should not deny or deprive Nigerians the right of using kerosene in Nigeria. The Federal Government which has exclusive right on petroleum products should make kerosene available to Nigerians to avoid suffering in the midst of the product. Nigerians should also learn to be trustworthy when assigned to monitor movement of petroleum products. Fight kerosene scarcity for Nigerians to smile again.
