Pension Fund: Union Wants Ex-Eagle Cement Boss Probed
The senior and junior Staff of Bulk Cement Company, Port Harcourt, Rivers State under the umbrella of chemincal and Non-Metallic Products Employees have called for the probe of the company’s erstwhile Managing Director, Mr. Vincent Nehikhare over alleged unpaid pension fund.
The union made the call during a solidarity march on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, while calling for the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the matter.
Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Chemical and Non-Metallic Products in the company, Comrade Simeon Onyeama alleged that in the year 2000, the workers of the company suffered oppressive policies as most of the workers were denied their entitlements and welfare packages.
Comrade Onyeama stated that considering the amount of accumulated workers entitlements over the years, there is every reason for investigate how the funds were disbursed or managed.
He further alleged that many of their members were unjustifiasbly laid off, while those that retired voluntarily have not received their gratuity over the years.
The labour leader disclosed that “the period of Mr Nehikhare’s stewardship was characterised with industrial dispute adding, “we can no longer keep going back, we need to go forward”.
He said further that “with Mr. Nehikare’s retirement the staff of the company have been liberated and are on their way to the promised land.
Also speaking, chairman of National Union of Chemical Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLNMPE) Comrade Emenike Miller stressed that without a proper probe of the management of the company under Nehikhare by the EFCC, the workers would not be pacified.
The NUCFRLANMPE chairman who stated this in a “Save Our Soul letter dated 23rd March this year to the management of the company lamented the non-payment of about N27,200,342.14 accruing from workers pension fund.
Comrade Miller also decried the way and manner 18 members of his union were forced to retire last year without payment of benefits.
He alleged that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were no longer issued to workers and most of their duties have been contracted out.
He however expressed the hope that the retirement of Mr Nehikare from Eastern Bulkcement would boost management and workers relationship, as the union is poised in seeking a better working environment for its members.
Addressing the workers, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Bulk Cement Company, Chief Collins Wabara called on the unions to cooperate with management to move the firm forward.
He promised that management would look into their grievances assuring of better times, ahead.

Rivers Judiciary Denies Issuing Court Order Stopping SOLAD from Swearing in RSCSC Members
The Rivers State Judiciary has denied a media report claiming that Justice Frank Onyiri of the State High Court issued an injunction order restraining the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), from inaugurating the newly appointed members of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission (RSCSC).
In a statement issued by the Deputy Chief Registrar in charge of litigation at the High Court, Menenen Poromon (Esq), the state Judiciary disassociated itself from the report, describing it as malicious and fabricated.
The statement emphasized that the report was a falsehood and a misrepresentation of what transpeared in the court.
Poromon clarified that no such order was issued by Justice Onyiri or any other judge of the High Court of the state and urged the public to disregard the information, as it lacked any iota of truth.
The statement however advised the public to verify any information concerning the state Judiciary directly from the office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of the State, to avoid spreading of misinformation.
