Youth Leader Wants Late Bayelsa Monarch Immortalised
A prominent youth leader in Bayelsa State, Mr Rufus Salvation, has appealed to the state and federal government to immortalise the traditional ruler of Ini-Wari community in Southern Ijaw, Late Chief Isain Igali.
Salvation, who is the leader of the Federal Government’s Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta region, said that the gesture would be a recognition of the monarch’s immense contribution to the prevailing peace in the region.
He made the appeal yesterday, while speaking on the death of the 86-year-old monarch in an interview with newsmen in Yenagoa.
He urged the authorities to name a public institution or foundation after the deceased in order to sustain the current peace in the region and preserve his memory for posterity.
The youth leader described him as a mentor to the youths of the area, adding that he saw every young man in the region as a potential leader.
According to him, the monarch was a selfless and charismatic leader, who sought the good of others at his own expense.
He said, “The pioneering role played by the monarch in the peace building process in the area led to the success of the Federal Government’s amnesty programme, which helped to bring back peace to the hitherto restive region.”
Salvation further urged other monarchs in the Niger Delta region to emulate the leadership qualities of the late royal father.
He recalled how Igali criss-crossed the creeks of Bayelsa and beyond during the crisis period, preaching the message of peace to the restive youths, who later embraced peace.
“He was a beacon of peace and propagated peace amongst the youths before we embraced the amnesty scheme.
