17th NSF: ‘Handballers Can Sweep Medals For Rivers’
Inspite of the difficult times being faced by Handball in Rivers State, Chief Coach of the State’s amateur Handball Association, Mr. Pat Innoma-West, has declared that handballers can sweep the stakes at the forthcoming 17th National Sports Festival, (NSF), to be hosted by the state.
Speaking to Tidesprots in a recent interview at premises of Alfred Diete- Spiff Sports Complex, the coach said that the state’s male and female handball teams have the potentials to dominate the festival and claim the gold medals next year.
He hinged his confidence on the performances of the State’s teams at the recently concluded national handball competition in Minna, Niger State.
According to Innoma-West, the States’ Under-21 and under-18 female teams finished first and second, respectively, while their males’ Under-18 counterparts placed third in the tournament.
The State also contributed 16 players to the National team for a recent continental tournament in which Nigeria excelled.
The coach therefore, believes that the game should be taken more seriously by Sports authorities in the state.
“Our performances in recent competitions should attract attention to the game and association in the state, especially, because of our potentials for laurels,” he stated.
Coach Innoma-West, however, regretted that handball was not getting the attention it deserves in the state.
“Handball is suffering in the state, we’re not getting the attention we deserve,” said the coach.
He disclosed that the last time the association participated in outside competition before the recent Minna trip was 18 years ago, and called for the provision of adequate facilities to ensure that the abundant talents in the state are effectively harnessed.
He further commended the leadership of the handball association in the state and its patrons for their efforts in revamping the fortunes of the game.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
