Victims Of Communal Clashes Need Psychological Therapy-NGO
An NGO operating under the aegis of Cochrane Nigeria has charged the federal and state governments to send health trauma managers to areas hit by communal crises so that they can attend to victims of the crises.
The NGO recommends psychological therapy as treatment for people with mental disorder so that they can be revived.
In a round table discussion with newsmen at the conference hall, Institute of Tropical Disease Research and Prevention Calabar, Consultant Psychiatrist and Immediate Past Secretary of Association of psychiatrists, Dr Bassey Edet called for more coordinated approach towards the management of multiple traumatic events being experienced in the country.
Edet stated that if stronger and more coordinated approach was introduced in management of traumatic cases, better result would be achieved in the rehabilitation of IDPs and traumatised persons.
“I’m not calling for establishment of trauma centres, but the use of coordinated approach in the management of multiple traumatic events that we have in the country.
“There were some efforts in handling IDPs issues, there were some efforts by NGOs and some state governments. Psychiatric hospital Bornu for example has an intervention. A lot of them are intervening in partnership with the ministry of health towards these IDPs. It’s just that if we have a stronger and a more coordinated approach and making it more centralised so that there is consistency of response, will raise the level of support.
Also speaking, Cochrane Coordinator Dr Emmanuel Effa, stressed that apart from providing physical support to the traumatised persons in crises zones, psychological therapy was a major tool to be employed to manage traumatized victims.
Effa advocates for conduct of higher-quality trials to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological therapies provided over longer periods to adults, their children and adolescents.
