Rivers Youths, NURSS Urge ASUU To Suspend Strike
Youths of Rivers State have called on the striking lecturers of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt and their University of Education counterpart to reconsider their position and return to work.
The youths who made the call at a media briefing in Port Harcourt, stressed the need for the lecturers to put the interest of the state above personal or other interests.
The president of the Rivers Youth Movement (RYM) Engr. Richard Alete who spoke on behalf of the group said that the situation was impacting negatively on the educational development of the state.
He said that while the state government was working hard to address the problem, it behoved on the lecturers to show a high level of patriotism by going back to the classroom.
According to him, “RYM is appealing to them to reconsider their position and go back to the classrooms, while dialogue continues”.
Also speaking, the National President, National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Comrade Edison Ogerenye Ehie said that the impasse is capable of creating a youth crisis in the state as students of the two state universities are now idle. Comrade Ehie said that even though reasons for the on-going strike may be genuine, time has come for the people of the State to appreciate the commitments being shown by the Rivers State Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the development of Education in the state.
Also speaking the Rivers/Bayelsa States Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Idala Banigo said that students may be compelled to embark on public demonstration if the strike is not called-off.
