Suspected Cultists Murder 90-Yr-Old In Rivers
Some suspected cult members have killed a 90-year-old man after setting his house ablaze.
The incident was said to have happened in Egbeda community in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, last Tuesday.
The victim, who was identified as Assor Woke, was killed in his house by the assailants.
Sources said the incident caused panic in the community as indigenes could not ascertain the reason the old man was killed.
Woke was said to be the oldest man in the area and had always preached peace in the community before his demise.
The Chairman of Egbeda Community Development Committee, Ukwoha Omereji, condemned the killing of Woke, and described it as worrisome.
Ukwoha explained that leaders in the area had been meeting to ensure that peace reigned in the community
“The reason for the killing is still unknown. The man was over 90 years old,” Ukwoha said.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the oldest man in the community died when two rival cult groups clashed in the community and set houses ablaze.
“It was during the clash that the house where the victim was staying was set on fire. The man, due to his age, could not escape, but died inside the house.
“The police have begun investigation into the incident with a view to arresting those behind the death of the old man and bringing them to justice,” Omoni said.
