FAAN Boss Seeks Airports’ Transformation
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma has said that the evolving nature of airport management demands a total transformation of airports which now mostly serve as public service providers and not commercial enterprises that are efficiently managed to generate more revenue and subsequently declare profit.
Dunoma, who said this while speaking in an aviation stakeholders forum in Lagos, Monday, noted that the forum was a unique platform to seek for ways to achieve the unique goal of transforming the airports into viable, sustainable business entities.
“I am sure that we will all be imparted with knowledge and ideas that will facilitate and accelerate our quests for financial liberation and transformation, looking at the sessions lined up for this forum.
Dunoma, who is also the President of Airport Council International (ACI) African Region said the forum has provided a veritable opportunity for the Nigerian government to market its programmes to develop the aviation sector as captured in the aviation roadmap approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
On his part, while speaking at the forum, the President of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Dr. Bernard Aliu raised several issues, including the absence of institutional, legal and regulatory frame- work supporting investments.
He also harped on the trend of many African airports accepting international flight without requisite certification.
“It is important to remember that the airports are very much at the front-lines where aviation security and passenger facilitation are concerned and they are the source of many travellers first impressions of the country they may be visiting”, he said.
Aliu also highlighted some of the challenges confronting the growth of African airports saying that Africa has what it takes to develop and become a leading part of the global economy.
