HYPREP Embarks On Healthcare Service In Ogoniland
The coordinating office of the Hydro Carbon Remedial and Restoration Project (HYPREP) will commence the second phase of health care services to pollution impacted communities in Ogoniland.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Project Coordinator, Dr Marvin Deki said the healthcare service was slated for Khana Local Government Area on Saturday April 14 in Bori and Taaba, Gokana Local Government Area at Tereba on 20th and 21st April while that of Eleme Local Government Area will take place at Onne and Ogale on Saturday 23rd April.
Deki said the health care service rendered in Ogoniland would help the HYPREP obtain the initial data for health impact survey.
He stated the commitment of the body to the remediation of impacted sites and restoration of impacted sites and restoration of livelihood of the people as enshrined in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report 2011. The coordinator said the remedial activities were significant of the scientific process preparatory to the actual clean up and explained that the process had nothing to do with politics, payment of compensation and sharing of money.
There is so much preparation before you hit the ground. We need to know the soil, the nature of the geology of the site, the nature of contaminant and the chemical nature of each of the contaminants in the soil. It is only after we know these things that we come up with the best technology to get rid of them.
