Manpower Dev: S’South, S’East LGSCs To Liaise With States
Local Government Service Commissions of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Catchment States is to liaise with governors of the states on ways to improve manpower in their various local government areas.
This was part of the resolutions at their meeting held in Port Harcourt, last Monday.
The meeting also resolved to foster and enhance communication among the various Local Government Service Commissions in the catchment areas.
Declaring the meeting open, Chairman of the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, Chief AzubuikeNmerukini, said that the commission is committed to the training and retraining of staff of local government councils in the State.
Chief Nmerukini, who was represented by the Commissioner incharge of Education at the Commission, Hon. Pleasant Braid, also commended Governor Wike for ensuring regular payment of local government workers’ salaries.
He also said that the meeting was important as it would strengthen the relationship between the various State Local Government Service Commissions and the Department of Public Administration, University of Nigeria.
In her address, the Head of Department, Public Administration and Local Government, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Chika Oguonu, said that the meeting was to find ways of enhancing the quality of services at the various local government councils in the South South and South East regions.
“Our convergence here is not by accident. We have a purpose, a mutual concern of the Department of Public Administration and Local Government and the Local Government Commissions in the South East and South South.
“That concern is the effective training of local government staff and quality services in the local government system”.
Prof. Oguonu, however, regretted that most commissions in the catchment states are not living up to their expectations, a situation she said is affecting the department negatively.
She noted that the department will continue to do its best towards the training of Local government Staff.
