Wike, CP Must Hear This

It is with pain in my heart and tears in my eyes that I am writing this piece to draw the attention of the Rivers State governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to the ongoing harassment, intimidation and extortion of private vehicle drivers by some touts who parade themselves as task force in the State. These men operate in connivance with the police.
I was a victim last Friday in the presence of my friend who incidentally is a first-time visitor to Port Harcourt.
We were coming from Port Harcourt International Airport where I went to pick my friend, when I suddenly noticed smoke in my car bonnet. I carefully made a stop-over at Mile One Bus Stop, adjacent to the Rumuwoji Market, Mile One, to check the car exhaust.
Three fierce-looking men including a policeman swooped on us, accusing us of illegal parking. At a bus stop! Even when my hazard lights were on and did not in any way obstruct the traffic.
I would have resisted their brigandage but for the presence of the policeman in uniform among them, who promised to make peace after I had narrated what happened to him.
Sadly, it turned out that the police in question was aiding and abetting this criminal act. He did not only collect my car key, but drove me to an uncompleted building at the Old Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital at Moscow, where I met other victims being exploited by these touts.
One of my car tyres was immediately deflated and I was asked to pay N25,000 for an offence I did not commit. All my explanations and plea fell on deaf ears and all efforts to seek the intervention of some policemen around were to no avail. It was later clear to me that the policemen were collaborators.
As a last resort, I had to offer these touts N24,000 when I remembered last week’s incident of how a suspected young ritualist escaped the den of the Police in a manner that looks curious and bizarre as if it was a Hollywood movie. Who knows what could have happened to my car if I had decided to abandon it with these touts?
More bizarre was the presence of two vulkanisers who were engaged to deflate and pump tyres at the cost of N500 per tyre.
Again, I had to pay another N500 to the gateman as exit fee before I was allowed to go. All amounted to N25,000 for committing no crime! What a terrible experience!
I decided to share this experience and to alert the state governor, not just because I was a victim, but because of the negative image such criminal act has on the state.
Because of this singular act, my friend who came all the way from Lagos to attend a wedding ceremony in Port Harcourt for the first time, vowed not to visit the city again!
I have been living in Port Harcourt since 1971 and had not experienced this kind of brazen extortion. It is quite unacceptable in a state that is governed by law. I just imagine the kind of impression my friend who visited Port Harcourt for the first time would have about Rivers State.
I, therefore, consider it apposite to bring the issue to the public domain and especially call the attention of Gov. Wike and the police authorities in the state to this illegal and criminal touting in the state.
I recall that it was as a result of this act of criminality that made Gov. Wike disband the TIMARIV on assumption of office. From where then does this so-called task force derive its powers and authority?
I think His Excellency should do something urgent to put a stop to this illegal extortion by these criminally-minded individuals who want to frustrate the rebuilding efforts of our workaholic governor in the state.
Meanwhile, the state Police Commissioner should call his men to order and redirect their energies to fighting crimes in the state instead of being a willing pawn in the hands of touts.
Rivers State is peaceful, friendly and an investor’s haven. It should not, therefore, be turned into a state where citizens and visitors would dread to live and do legitimate businesses.
