Restructuring: Opobo/Nkoro Residents Slam APC Leaders
Residents of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, have accused the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) of reneging on its promise of restructuring the country during the campaigns for the 2015 general elections.
The residents, who spoke to The Tide last Wednesday in Opobo Town on the state of Nigeria politically, expressed worry over the drumbeats of disintegration, confusion, apprehension and uncertainty that have engulfed the nation in recent times.
According to an industrialist, Dr. Francis Uranta, the best way to nip the looming dangers in the country in the bud is the immediate implementation of the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.
Uranta said it is necessary for Nigerian elites to approach the United Nations to prevail on the government to give consideration to ethnic agitations by genuinely restructuring Nigeria.
Also reacting, a human rights activist in the area, Mr. Dennis Iworima appealed to the Archbishop of Canterbury to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a friend, to go ahead and restructure Nigeria which present economic and political state is unimaginable before the 2019 general elections.
As he puts it, “I use this opportunity to appeal to the United Nations and the Archbishop of Canterbury to use their traditional and religious relationship with Nigeria to prevail on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, not to expose the nation to an unimaginable disaster of immense proportion by not listening to the frustrations of the various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
“I observe that the nation, as presently constituted, is not realising her God-given potential in the comity of nations because of the fraudulent Constitution of 1999”.
Barring her mind on the nation’s porous economic system and the need for restructuring, a former labour leader and chairperson of NULGE in the LGA, Mrs Fyne Jaja, reiterated that the United Nations authorities cannot afford to ignore Nigeria now because if Nigeria’s government continues its opposition to restructuring and allows irrationality and malady to envelope the citizens, the end result would be disastrous.
In his response on Nigeria’s economic woes an Opobo-based businessman, Mr Daniel Anyaikpe used the medium to demand that the only recipe for Nigeria’s economy to bounce back out of recession is restructuring of the country.
