Poor Power Supply: DISCO Blames Non-Payment Of Bills

The Chief Operating Officer, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Mr. Rahul Singh said yesterday that non-payment of bills by customers has contributed so much to the low electricity distribution in the state.
The KEDCO’s Chief Operating Officer, made this disclosure during the company’s first quarter customers’ consultation forum held in Kano.
He said the forum was organised in partnership with the customers so as to listen to their complaints with the aim of finding a lasting solution to their problems.
According to him, one of the major challenges facing the company in terms of the low distribution of the electricity in their catchment areas is the non-payment of electricity bills by the customers.
”The non-payment of the bills has contributed so much towards the low distribution of the electricity supply in those three states under our jurisdiction,” Singh added.
The operating officer identified other challenges faced by the company as the illegal connections of electricity and the activities of vandals on transformers and cables.
According to him, from 2016 to date, KEDCO had lost over N160 million as a result of activities of vandals on its equipment.
Singh called on various communities to always be on the lookout for criminals so as to assist KEDCO in protecting its equipment in the customers’ interest.
He called on the customers across Kano, Jigawa and Katsina States to ensure prompt payment of their bills so as to improve the supply of the power.
”If customers are giving us all the necessary support, especially by cooperating with our staff and paying their bills, I assure you that the distribution will increase and there will be stable power supply,” Singh added.
Some of the customers, who spoke to newsmen appealed to KEDCO to always respond to their complaints immediately they were lodged.
According to them, whenever they lodge complaints to the company, it usually takes KEDCO long time before responding.
