NIS Cautions Personnel On Illegal Migrants
The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has warned its personnel to desist from taking the law into their hands, especially when handling cases of illegal migrants.
The Comptroller of NIS in the state, Mrs Funke Adeuyi, gave the warning last Wednesday in Calabar, during a capacity workshop for officers and men of the command.
Report that the workshop was held to educate the personnel on the “Extant Provision of Immigration Act 2015 and Immigration Regulations 2017”.
She said that, it was important for men of the NIS to treat illegal migrants who may approach them at the control posts or highways with dignity.
“Illegal migrants are our clients, whenever we see them do wrong, it is not our duty to take laws into our hands.
“Even when these illegal migrants commit an offence, NIS personnel should be humane in their treatment because section 43 of the new regulation says that “every migrant has the right to humane treatment’’.
“If any migrant commits any heinous offence, we are to arrest him in a proper way, profile them and document them to face the law as the case may be,’’ she said.
She further advised the personnel to always have respect for fundamental human rights of the citizenry, saying that, anyone who violated such rights would be disciplined.
Adeuyi said that the objective of the workshop was to impart adequate knowledge of the law to the personnel, adding that, it would help them in the discharge of their duties.
“It is important to train personnel of NIS to adequately know the law, the penalty, enforcement and offences with a view to helping them to discharge their professional duties creditably.
“The law is necessary at this moment because we have to continually police our borders, check illegal migration, child theft and others’’, Adeuyi said.
She thanked the Comptroller-General of NIS, Mr Mohammed Babandede, for providing the command with the necessary tools to fight trans-border crimes and other illegalities.
