Peace Corps Solicits Youth Empowerment
The Nigerian Peace Corps, Rivers State command, has called on the state government to empower more youths in the state in order to reduce restiveness among them.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday at a peace rally organized by the corps command in the state, the Deputy Commandant, Administration, Rivers State Command, Prince Amaechi stated that the recognition of the corps by the Senate has brought immense joy to its members.
“Senate approved the corps to be one of the para-military organisations in Nigeria and we fought for it for a very long time.
“We are celebrating to let people know that the peace corps has come to stay”, he said.
Also speaking at the rally, state course secretary, Owen Obadiah said the objectives of the peace corps is to partner most security agencies to reduce criminality among youths in the state.
“The peace corps is to tackle the insecurity of the country from the angle of discipline of Nigerians.
“We are also going into serving as a medium of feedback information on security matters”, he said.
Three officers of the Peace Corps command representing Andoni, Eleme and Ahoada commands, Mr. Dennis Akpah, Fabian Braide and Mr. Esther Chinda talked about the challenges facing the organisation and disclosed ways the command has helped to promote peace among youths in the state, through empowerment.
“People within the Andoni area, that is the officers there are very vigilant and the corps encourages people to join the organisation and help in the fight against crime and criminality.
“Without being paid, we are working hard and now that Senate has recognized us we wish to do more”, he said.
The corps expressed appreciation to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki the Speaker of the House of Represenatives, Yakubu Dogara, chiefs and traditional rulers amongst others for signing the Peace Act as a para-military organisation into law.
