Airport Authority Assures On Trolley Charge Review
The airport authority
has assured that adequate measures will be taken to address the high charges by trolley operators for conveying of cargoes and luggage.
This follows the outcry by air travelers in Nigeria against the high cost of using some facilities at the nation’s airport which they allege to be exploitative.
Making this known in a communication forum in Lagos, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the authority, Mr. Yakubu Dati, explained that some travelers had petitioned the ministry of aviation over the issue, insisting that the cost of usage of trolleys is covered by certain taxes.
He said that the airport authority aligns its position with that of the minister of state for aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, who had assured that payment for the use of trolleys at the airports would stop as soon as the current contract agreement expires.
He further said that the minister had posited that the arrangement could not be stopped immediately as it could lead to litigations, adding that the contract would not be reviewed as soon as it expires.
On FAAN’s position, Dati said that the authority believes that the ministry is on the right direction and that they have agreed that they will return to the old system, as soon as the agreement ends.
Dati noted that FAAN understands the agony of air travellers who have described payment for using facilities like trolleys as clear exploitation.
“At the moment, we cannot help the situation because the services are offered by concessionaires. It is at the end of the concession that FAAN can intervene”, Dati stated.
Air travellers had wondered why users of items such as trolleys still had to pay to use the facility, arguing that the use of such facilities are built into tickets.
