Students, Lecturers Okay RIVCAS’ Planned Upgrade
Some students and
lecturers of the Rivers State College of Arts and Science (RIVCAS), have commended the proposed upgrading of the school to a Polytechnic.
This is sequel to the proposed “Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill” which passed through the first reading in the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) last week.
The students and lecturers of the institution were unanimous over the prospect of the school becoming a Polytechnic, a situation, they said, would add to the value of their certificates.
A student of the Mass Communication Department, who spoke to The Tide on condition of anonymity, stated that beyond upgrading the school, it will enable more parents to send their children to school.
According to the student, my younger sister gained admission in Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, but could not attend because of the distance, since our parents cannot afford for her to stay in the hostel.
If RIVCAS becomes a Polytechnic, it will be easier for her to attend classes from Rumuokwuta, where we live.
A lecturer in the school also stated that beyond the fact that it will enable parents and guardians in the vicinity to send their children and wards to school as a result of proximity, the status of the school will further enhance education in the state and country at large.
“In fact, there are so many benefits accruable from upgrading than can be explained in this interview. ,” the lecturer said.
It will be recalled that the leader of the RSHA, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, last Tuesday, presented the “Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill, 2016” to the House and it passed through the first reading.
Presenting the Bill, Hon. Amaewhule said it seeks to create a law for the conversion of the Rivers State College of Arts and Science to the Port Harcourt Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and transfer the staff and properties of the College, other matters incidental thereto to the Port Harcourt Polytechnic.

Tinubu Flags Off 2027 Re-election Campaign In Kaduna
The campaign rally, held at the Kaduna Township Stadium, attracted Vice-President Kashim Shettima, APC governors, party leaders, federal and state lawmakers, political stakeholders and supporters from across the country.
The flag-off marks the beginning of the APC’s drive to secure a second presidential term for President Tinubu, with the party expected to promote its achievements, defend its economic reforms and outline its policy priorities under the proposed Renewed Hope 2.0 agenda.
Kaduna’s selection for the campaign launch underscores the strategic importance of the North-West, a region with a substantial voting population and considerable influence on presidential election outcomes.
The APC faces a significant challenge in Kaduna, where the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, defeated President Tinubu in the 2023 election. The rally therefore provides the ruling party an opportunity to strengthen its grassroots structures and regain electoral support in the state.
Addressing supporters, Vice-President Shettima appealed to Northern voters, highlighting President Tinubu’s political relationships with prominent Northern leaders, including Alhaji Abubakar, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Vice-President’s appeal reflects the APC’s determination to consolidate its support in the North as the party intensifies preparations for the presidential contest.
The Renewed Hope 2.0 agenda is expected to feature prominently in the campaign, providing a platform for President Tinubu to explain his administration’s economic policies and outline plans for another term.
However, the President’s record on economic reforms, rising living costs, petrol prices, employment, infrastructure and insecurity is expected to attract considerable scrutiny during the electioneering period.
