RSG Warns Against Street Trading

The Rivers State Gov
ernment has reiterated its commitment to stop street trading in Port Harcourt and its environs.
Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Chinyere Igwe, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt said that the enforcement team would continue to do its work to ensure total compliance.
He said that several efforts had been made through enlightenment and dialogue to make the traders see reason, why they should discontinue with street trading, but regretted that the traders had continued to ignore government’s directive.
According to him, the focus of government is to ensure that issue of street and illegal trading is stopped in Port Harcourt and that government is determined to continue in the process gradually, until the streets are free from illegal trading.
“I see no reason why people find it difficult to go into the market where provisions have been made for trading but will prefer to sell by the road side, causing obstruction”, he said.
