RSG Warns Illegal Traders …Inaugurates Urban Guards
The Rivers State
Government has warned of dire consequences over the continuous violations of the State Urban Development Law by illegal traders and illegal property developers in the State.
The Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Hon. Chinyere Igwe who said this during the inauguration of Urban Guards in Port Harcourt said that the government would no longer take it lightly as defaulters would be punished accordingly.
Hon. Igwe urged the guards to dwell more on arrest than seizing their goods, maintaining that anyone caught violating the Urban Development law would be arrested and prosecuted.
He also warned members of the guards against extortion of money from illegal traders, stressing that their work is to control illegal trading activities, proliferations of markets and motor parks in some parts of Port Harcourt City and its environs.
He regretted that inspite of the campaigns against illegal street tradings in the city, some persons had continued to engage in illegal markets, building under high tension as well as developing property without the approved building plans.
The Commissioner used the occasion to enjoin all illegal traders and violators of building plan to desist forthwith and used the conventional motor parks and markets.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dirokweni Joseph Amiofori said that the inauguration of the Urban Guards would make people to obey the Urban Development law of the state.
He also charged the guards against engaging in physical combat with their suspects.
