A research centre,
Bioresources Development Centre (BIODEC), Odi in Bayelsa State, says it is eager to transfer technology to the people of the Niger Delta to enable them to create wealth.
The Centre’s Director, Mr Josiah Habum, said this in an interview with newsmen in Odi recently.
Habum said that the centre had recorded many breakthroughs in its research efforts, adding that the discoveries and inventions were awaiting adaptation for commercial applications.
He recalled that the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonaya Onu, had, during a visit to the centre, emphasised Federal Government’s determination to use science and technology to diversify the country’s economy.
He added that the centre was collaborating with some business concerns for the commercial adaptation of its technology in fruit juice production.
He expressed optimism that the centre would be a catalyst to development of the Niger Delta, noting that it had capacity to quickly transfer technology to the rural dwellers, including peasant farmers, to increase agricultural yields.
He said “we are here in Odi to train the people to tap into our wealth of experience in the laboratory and demonstration grounds.
“We are here also to adapt the results of our research efforts to create wealth and make money.
“The centre is showcasing the results of its research and applying them for the benefit of the communities by transferring the technology to improve on yields and create wealth for the people.”
Habum said that the centre had achieved success in grass cutter breeding, snail farming, aquaculture, mushrooming technology transfer and plant tissue culture technology, among others.
According to him, training programmes will be organised toward quick transfer of skills to the people, irrespective of their educational background.
“We have modified our courses such that it will be very easy for even the common man to easily grasp and apply so as to empower himself or herself economically.
“We have perfected the techniques to grow species of crops that hitherto could not grow in the Niger Delta such as ginger which has enormous economic value.
“We urge the people of the Niger Delta region to take advantage of these achievements.”
