Group Wants New Vehicles Importation To Nigeria
A group under the aegis
of Association of Registered Freight Forwarders in Nigeria (AREFFN) has stressed the need for the Federal Government to encourage importation of new vehicles into the country.
Secretary of the association, PTML Chapter, Elder Festus Ajomaho who made the assertion in a chat with newsmen in Lagos said such a move would bring about a drop in the influx of sub-standout vehicles.
In his words, “The newer the vehicles, the lower the duty”, stressing that duty hike on used vehicles popularly called ‘Tokumbo’ would lead to reduction of sub-standard vehicles imported into Nigeria.
He noted that the association is canvassing that if the federal government wanted to help matters in line with the automobile sector, it should consider a situation whereby the newer the vehicle imported into the country, the lower the duty paid, reiterating that the older the vehicle, the higher the duty paid as it would help reduce the influx of all manner of vehicles into the country.
He noted with dismay the rate at which junk and rickety vehicles were being imported into the country, and called on the government to put some measures in place to ensure that duty payable on imported used vehicles is high to check mate the influx.
Ajomaho further called for encouragement of duty reduction on imported new vehicles, adding that the key factor militating against local car production had been lack of electricity and unstable automobile policies by the government.
