Subsidy Removal: Labour Takes Final Decision, Friday
Labour leaders under the
aegis of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will take a final decision on the next line of action on the fuel subsidy removal being announced by the Federal Government on Wednesday.
Chairman of the TUC, Rivers State, Chika Onuegbu, who disclosed this to newsmen, yesterday, while reacting to the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, said that the National Executive Committee of the union will meet in Lagos on Friday to take final decision on the matter.
Onuegbu accused the Federal Government of orchestrating the recent fuel crisis and shortage across the country which had lingered for a long time now so as to score a cheap point and to justify its action on subsidy removal.
He said that the timing of the subsidy removal at this point when Nigerians are facing economic hardship is wrong, adding that this will inflict more pain and hardship to Nigerians.
“I am not against subsidy removal on petrol, but necessary things have to be done and the right process put in place before you can remove subsidy form fuel’, Onuegbu said.
The TUC leader lashed at the federal government for calling for a stakeholders meeting, including the labour leaders on the discussion on the way forward on subsidy removal, without allowing them to take the matter back to their subjects for further deliberation.
He posited that the right thing that would have been done was to allow labour leaders to take the matter home and discuss such at their various levels before the final announcement, and vowed that TUC will resist every attempt by the federal government to impoverish the masses of Nigeria.
