That Obasanjo’s Letter
This is certainly not the
best time for anybody to be jealous of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Not with all the criticisms against him by people of all ages since his letter to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dogara, was made public.
A lot of people are also enraged by the former president’s comment about Nigerian governors last Monday. Speaking at the inauguration conference of the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, he was quoted as saying that some state governors had turned themselves into emperors and had appropriated the funds belonging to the local councils in their states into their private estates.
Since he left office in 2007, Obasanjo has gained the reputation of one of the most outspoken elder statesmen in the country, who never hesitated in publicly condemning any perceived wrong doings of successive administrations.
In his recent letter addressed to the two heads of the National Assembly, the former president accused the parliamentarians of corruption, greed, lawlessness, impunity and of repeatedly breaking the nation’s laws.
Having gone through the letters repeatedly, one does not really see much big deal about the letter that would warrant all the negative reactions. There is virtually nothing said by Obasanjo in that his January 13 letter that has not been said by many other Nigerians.
We also know that the former president is not a saint. Infact, as many have pointed out, his administration contributed a lot to the present predicament of the country. He even crowned his “sins” by plotting to have a third tenure which is totally against the Nigerian Constitution. But should that deprive him of the right to comment on the state of the nation? Should we fail to consider the merits of his comments because he probably didn’t do things any better when he was in charge of the affairs of the nation? I don’t think so. We cannot throw away the baby with the bathing water. Infact, what some people expected the lawmakers to do thoroughly analyse the letter and see how they could use the suggestions, comments and complaint therein to build a better Assembly that we will all be proud of.
For instance, in the fourth paragraph of the letter, “the former president said, the purpose of election into the legislative Assembly particularly at the national level is to give service to the nation and not for the personal service and interest of members at the expense of the nation which seemed to have been the mentality, psychology, mindset and practice within the National Assembly since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation. Where is patriotism? Where is commitment? Where is service?
Couldn’t the action of the current legislators, particularly the unending fight over who gets appointed into “juicy committees” had prompted this comment?
Currently there are plans by the Federal lawmakers to purchase over 469 cars for themselves in spite of the current economic challenges facing the country. Such act of insensitivity probably led Obasanjo to write “A pool of a few cars for each chamber will suffice for any committee chairman or members for any specific duty. The waste that has gone into cars, furniture, housing renovation in the past was mind-bogging and these were veritable sources of waste and corruption. That was why they were abolished. Bringing them back is inimical to the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians”.
The ex-president went on to speak the minds of many Nigerians concerning some anomalies going on at the National Assembly and also to give wise counsels which if adhered to will bring development and progress in the country.
Incidentally, these abnormalities are not peculiar to National Assembly or law makers, both the Judiciary and the Executive share largely in the blame. As earlier stated by Obasanjo, a situation where some state governor’s live like super lords while demanding sacrifices from the citizens for the country to survive the hard times is quite condemnable. For some years now, many states have not had elected chairmen of local government councils. The governors rather prefer appointing their cronies as care-taker committee chairmen all in a bid to pocket the entire states and do whatever they like with the local government allocations.
This, no doubt, has crippled the local government areas as many of the chairmen hardly receive enough revenue to pay workers salaries not to talk of carrying out projects. In some local governments in the South East, workers are being owed for 11 months, some six months and all that. You can imagine the condition of such workers, the families and their numerous dependents.
So, instead of castigating the former president for speaking the obvious truth, his effort chatting a letter course for the country should be appreciated and encouraged. I have no doubt that if other leaders both past and present, statesmen and women, religious leaders, community heads and other people we look up to seize being selfish and sycophantic but speak the truth at all times and in all situations no matter whose ox is gored, there will be peace, justice and equity, less corruption, good, responsible leadership in the country which will be better for everyone.
