NEMSA Moves To Phase Out Wooden Electricity Poles
The Nigerian Electric
ity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), says there is no going back on its plan to stop the use of wooden electricity poles in the country as a way of maintaining standard.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, Mr Peter Ewesor, stated this in an interview with newsmen, saying the step is part of its holistic efforts towards checking bad installation practices in the country.
He said, “today in Nigeria, there is no where you have a good factory that produces good, well treated poles. The simple reason is that these unscrupulous wooden pole producers produce poles that are cheap.
“So, we are going to outlaw the use of wooden poles in 2016. It will be one of the first things we are going to do in the power sector,”
The NEMSA boss further revealed that the body was intensifying collaboration with the standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Consumer Protection Council and other relevant agencies to ensure that defective electrical equipment do not find their ways into the country.
He said,” part of our plans for this year is to create a platform that will enable every Nigerian to easity report any impending danger through easy information to NEMSA.
“We have an Act that is specifically meant for enforcement of technical standards, and regulations, inspections, testing and certification,” he said stressing that electricity is a very good servant that provides needed comfort at homes and workplaces, but is also a bad master because it does not give time to prepare whenever it wreaks havoc.
He regretted that huge damages and loss of previous lives have resultant effects of fake appliances and installagions and stressed the need to ensure that there are no defective electrical installation in our environment.
The NEMSA boss lauded manufacturers of local meters for impressive results shown by the series of texts and urged the local manufacturers keep to the standard.
