For more than three
weeks, subscribers on the MTN network have been visiting every MTN office nearest to them to update their data.
This was sequel to several text messages sent to its subscribers across the country urging them to do so.
Investigations by The Tide recently in parts of Port Harcourt and elsewhere indicated that the exercise went on, even on Saturdays and Sundays.
Some of the subscribers who spoke to The Tide accused the MTN group of using obsolete equipment.
According to one of them who spoke to The Tide, he had done the exercise more than four times.
He wondered why other network providers perform the exercise once and for all.
In another development, most MTN subscribers who spoke to The Tide claimed that they were given free credit ranging from N1,000 to N20,000.
This, The Tide gathered, was a strategy used by the service provider to induce their subscribers to comply with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC’s) directive.
More over, subscribers could only make use of such credit after having their data updated by the company.
When The Tide visited some of the MTN outlets at Garrison, Rumuokuta, Stadium Road and Aggrey Road large crowds were seen making efforts to have their data captured.
Debunking the allegation of obsolete equipment used by the service provider, the MTN Connect Manager in Ahoada Mr. Chima Okeke said it was not true.
According to him, from time to time, the company updates its equipment and other soft wares to meet customer satisfaction.
He said it was indisputable that MTN apart from having a wider coverage also has the largest number of subscribers in the country to contentd with.
