The Trade Union Con
gress (TUC), Bayelsa State chapter, yesterday described the Federal Government’s plans to employ 10, 000 policemen in the country as a good development.
The state TUC Chairman, Mr Tari Dounana, told newsmen in Yenagoa that the move was part of strategies by the present administration to tackle insurgency.
Our correspondent report that the Federal Government gave the indication at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Police in Abuja on Monday.
The summit was entitled “Community Partnership, Approach to Internal Security and Crime Management.”
Dounana said that boosting the police force would not only guarantee security from the grassroots, but also create more conducive environment for a growing economy.
“The plans by the Federal Government to employ more police officers is a welcome development.
“The recruitment will boost security and we all need to know and believe that good security brings good workforce environment.
“We, workers want more secured environment; I heard that the Inspector-General of Police is also supporting community policing; that is another good development.
“Nigeria should go beyond community policing; the present government should expedite action to implement some of these policies because development can only occur in a safe and secure atmosphere.
“My advice for the youths is that they should desist from cultism and all sorts of criminality and support states and Federal Government policies for a better Nigeria.
“Creation of jobs should not be left in the hand of the government alone; the youths can also play their part by engaging in small-scale businesses,” he said.
