Education Stakeholders Decry Sub-Standard Schools
Private school owners in
Akwa Ibom have decried the proliferation of sub-standard private nursery, primary and post-primary schools in the state.
The state Secretary, National Association of Private School Proprietors of Nigeria (NAPPS), Mr Ime Uwemedimo made the remark while speaking with newsmen in Uyo.
Uwemedimo said that most proprietors of private schools in the state were not motivated by the need to provide “sound academic foundation for our children’’.
“It is a pity that the major reason people establish schools virtually everywhere in our environment is mainly for money making.
“Some of them do not have interest of giving a bright future to our children,” Uwemedimo said.
He attributed poor performance of students in external examinations as well as examination malpractice to proliferation of sub-standards schools in the state.
The secretary called on the state government to check the establishment of illegal and sub-standard schools in the state.
He also urged the state ministry of education to evolve stringent conditions for establishment and running of private schools in the state.
He said the association was ready to collaborate with the state government in the fight against illegal and sub-standard private schools.
He also called on all owners of private schools to register with the association after getting approval from the ministry of education.
