Don Wants PH Refinery Ceded To N’Delta
A university don, Prof Tonye Johnarry, has advocated the ceding of the Port Harcourt Refinery to the Niger Delta people under the post amnesty deal rather than selling it to private entrepreneurs.
In a lecture entitled: “Niger Delta Development Through Proof Monuments” delivered at a special forum to mark the 80th birthday of a renowed civil engineer, Elder Enoch George, Johnarry noted that such ceding would empower the people of the region who have been clamouring for resource control.
Johnarry, of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, also appealed to the Federal Government to assist Niger Delta States own Niger Delta University jointly for use as an international centre for human capital Development.
The university don, who was a former commissioner in Rivers State argued that though the Niger Delta University is owned by the Bayelsa State government, the name reflects a regional image, which he likened to the philosophy of Nigeria’s first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe when he established the University of Nigeria in the present day Enugu State.
Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Elder Stephenson Ogan had charged engineers to live worthy legacy through honest and dedicated service to humanity.
Remarks, the Octogenarian, Elder Enoch George tasked the political class not to play politics with engineering works. According to him, engineering does not only create wealth but provide monumental infrastructure to serve humanity.
George however, warned against undue time frame for engineering works to be completed, saying that such pressure could lead to poor service delivery and in turn lead to the destruction of lives and property.
George, whose firm, Enoch Associates, was the first indigenous company to conduct geo-technical investigation offshore, also appealed to engineers to build for posterity and not their pocket.
Prof. S.C Teme of the Institute of Geo-Science and Space Technology of the State University of Science and Technology, Prof Emmanuel Opuwaribo, Mr. Akuro George and Prof T.M. Oguara of the Niger Delta University were among guests who gave goodwill messages at the occasion.
