RSG Engages 5,000 Youth In Public Works, Soon
The Rivers State Govern
ment is to engage over 5,000 youths in road maintenance and other aspects of public works under the State Employment and Expenditure for Result (SEEFOR) programme before the end of this year.
The Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning, Mr. Gogo Levi Charles who said this during a courtesy in his office by the World Bank/Flow SEEFOR implementation support mission to Rivers State, stated that Governor Amaechi was desirous of taking the youths off the streets.
Mr. Charles said that it was against this background that the government was doing everything possible to ensure the success of the programme.
According to him, the various implementing units have distinguished themselves in their various aspect, adding that the state is moving faster, in the programme.
The Commissioner assured the team that the state will not disappoint the World Bank on the programme.
Earlier, the World Bank Mission Task Team leader Mr. Jens Kristensen said that SEEFOR programme was conceived by the World Bank/European Union (EU) to create employment opportunities in four states of the Niger Delta region.
“It is expected that at the end of the five years period of the programme over 30,000 youths will be engaged through public works in the Niger Delta”, he said.
He said that the team was in the state to assess the progress made so far, stressing that the visit would be undertaken every six months.
In his presentation, the state coordinator of the programme, Mr. Kelcious Amos said that significant progress had been recorded within the last five months of the programme especially in the area of public works.
Mr. Amos also said that a competitive bidding process for the engagement of waste managers would soon be opened.
