Don Urges Intending Principals To Possess Master’s Degree
A teacher of Educational Management at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof Ugochukwu Agi, has advised those desiring to be school principals to possess a minimum of masters degree and a certificate in school administration.
Agi also recommended that accountable autonomy of school principals as well as principal-ship by licence should be given to principals as this will make them strive harder to be creative, adding that principal authorities are being stiffened when sufficient authority is not given to them.
Professor Agi gave the recommendations, while delivering his Inaugural lecture at the 49th Inaugural lecture with the theme: “Priming Internal Mechanisms For The Improvement Of Nigeria’s Secondary Education System In The 21st Century,” at the Ignatius Ajuru University Of Education, Port Harcourt.
He said once there is policy on national school improvement planning, documents will emerge that will become a guide for school authorities in the states.
‘A deliberate policy on school improvement should be formulated by government, ministry and agencies. Once there is a policy on national school improvement planning, documents will emerge that becomes a framework or guide for school heads and others.
“School boards and ministry of education are to compel schools to produce their own school improvement plan using the National Schools Improvement plan as guide.
“School heads should be appointed from persons who are certified as holding certificates in educational administration,” the Professor added.
