Employment Racketeering: Rivers Police Arrest Man for Defrauding Job Seekers
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested one Philip Odereghi Oghogh who allegedly defrauded applicants who applied for the recently conducted Rivers State University employment recruitment exercise to the tune of between N200,000 to N450,000 with a promise of giving them employment.
Confirming the arrest to journalists in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe- Koko said the suspect was arrested inside the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Choba, yesterday.
She said investigation into the matter has commenced.
Narrating how the suspect was arrested, National Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign, Mr. Prince Wiro, said the suspect was arrested following months of trailing.
He said the issue of alleged fraud came to the attention of the organisation last December and that the organisation had since been on the trail of the suspect.
Wiro said an executive member of the organisation, acting on credible intelligence, sighted the suspect inside the premises of UPTH and raised the alarm which attracted the hospital’s security to arrest the suspect.
Wiro called on the Rivers State University to make a clear statement on the claims made by the suspect that he worked for some powerful persons in the institution
He urged that the matter should be investigated and if the suspect is found culpable he should be made to face justice.
One of the victims, Otavaino Stephens, who spoke to Journalists on behalf of others, alleged “that Mr Philip said he works with Rivers State University directly that as such convinced them and have confident to pay the money to him”
According to him, “We paid N250,000 each to get the job because we believed he was working with the school and acting on the school’s instructions.
“Some of us paid cash, some paid with transfer. Myself and other persons I am aware of, who I brought, he collected N200,000 each from us.
“The one I am aware, we are more than 15 persons, all this while, we have been waiting for the employment to come, to no avail. We have being calling, calling, he will say we should hold on, that next month, things like that.
“We paid him money since last year March/April. We want him to pay us all the money that he has taken for the job, he said he will give us, but he has not given it to us. He collected from some persons N450,000, some N300,000, some N250,000”.
Our correspondent reports that the suspect is currently being detained at the Choba Police Division after he was handed over to the Police by the UPTH’s internal security operatives.
