CAFCC: Rivers United Keep Hope Alive For Group Stage, Beat Benghazi 5-0
Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt have kept hope alive having secured a place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, as they thrashed visiting El Nasr Benghazi of Libya 5-0 in the first leg of the competition.
The match which was played at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, on Wednesday, did not attract much crowd occasioned by the day and time fixed for the encounter.
Speaking in a post match interview on Wednesday, the Technical Director of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma attributed the victory basically to team work by his players.
He commended the players for their impressive performance, saying that their 6-0 loss to Wydad of Morocco last week made them to train hard as they felt sad to have conceded such high number of goals margin.
Eguma explained that the technical crew did some extra job to achieve the feat.
“Today the players have proven that they are really good by getting such a good result, however our opponents show some good play in the early minute of the game but it did not last long before we took the lead in the 12th minute.
“My players played according to instructions. Today my players were more technical and able to convert our chances. Not that we did not get those chances against Wydad but to convert them was the problem.
“Our technical plan was not to allow El Nasr Benghazi to get a goal against us. To achieve this victory today, I want to say that we have started the race and it is not over yet since is it a two-leg affair.
“We have crossed the first huddles and looking forward to cross the second one,” Eguma said.
Also speaking, the head coach of El Nasr Benghazi, Zoran Milinkovic said that his team lost to a better side, acknowledging that fact that Rivers United is a good team.
According to him, he doesn’t have anything to complain about the officiating.
