Ogun Farmers Receive Free Agro-Inputs, Others
More farmers in Ogun State at the weekend received free agro-inputs under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (OGUN-CARES FADAMA RA2) project.
The project, a state and federal government initiative in collaboration with the World Bank was directed to assist farmers in six local government areas of Ogun state.
The local government areas include; Ijebu North and Odogbolu (Ogun East), Odeda and Obafemi Owode, (Ogun Central), as well as Yewa North and Ado-, (Ogun West).
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Adeola Odedina, said this when presenting the incentives to beneficiaries in Yewa-North Local Government Secretariat, in Aiyetoro.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Dotun Sorunke, Odedina reiterated the importance of the OGUN CARES progamme in fulfillment of one of the cardinal points of the present administration in ensuring food security.
The commissioner said the distribution exercise had started in Ado- and Ijebu-North Local Government Secretariats in Ota and Ijebu-Igbo respectively.
He disclosed that the beneficiaries were given three weaners (pigs), three sheep and goats, two bags of 50kg fertilisers and herbicides and garri processing equipment, rice processing equipment, among others.
“Today, our farmers have seen that this project is real. It is aimed at supporting a little below 21,000 farmers across the State.
“Many farmers lost their means of livelihood to COVID-19, but with adequate utilisation of these inputs, within six months to one year, your farming businesses will bounce back because the agro-inputs will surely boost your farming and these animals will reproduce massively”, he said.
In her welcome address, the Project Manager, OGUN-CARES FADAMA RA2, Mrs Solape Awe, applauded the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for supporting the Federal Government and the World Bank in the implementation of the project,
Awe said the aim of project was to empower pro-poor and vulnerable farmers as well as those in agricultural value-chain with emphasis on youths and women who were adversely affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
She noted that “OGUN CARES” is a multi-sectorial programme and the agricultural aspect is being implemented by FADAMA platform, in four Delivery Link Indicators (DLIs), which are, Agricultural Inputs and Services, Labour-Intensive Agricultural Infrastructure.
Others are agricultural assets for production and mitigating food loss and waste, as well as upgrading of wet markets to function safely to empower 20,922 farmers in all the local government areas of the state within two years.
In his remark, the Chairman, Ado- Local Government,Mr Sheriff Musa, lauded the effort of government for kick-starting the input distribution in the area to alleviate the plight of farmers.
According to him, Ota is in a vantage position over others, based on its large urban and agrarian population, large arable land for agriculture, as well as being the industrial hub of the state.
Rivers state Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu has commended “The Port Harcourt City One Love,”a Port Harcourt based humanitarian orgnisation For it’s commitment towards alleviating the sufferings of the poor and vulnerable in the society.
Professor Ngozi Nma Odu said this while speaking at this year’s edition of “operation feed the needy” a yearly outreach program of “The Port Harcourt City One Love ” in Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor said by feeding more than sixty thousands hungry people within the past six years, the Port Harcourt City One Love Movement has distinguished itself as a club that cares for the less privilege in the society.
She commended the , organization for listing eleven thousand persons to be fed in the current exercise.
Meanwhile The Port Harcourt City One Love has planned a permanent solution to the problem of feeding the poor in the state.
The leader of the group Mr Idaere Gogo Ogan who said this in an interview with newsmen during the distribution of food items to the poor and vulnerables in Port Harcourt said the organization is planning a permanent food kitchen where poor and vulnerable persons can work in anytime and get fed.
Idaere Gogo Ogan said more than sixty thousands poor and vulnerable persons across Port Harcourt City and environs have been fed since the inception of “The operation feed the needy” program six years ago,adding that so far sixty thousands poor and vulnerable persons have beneffited.
He described the group as a platform to promote friendship, brotherhood, community development empathy and feeding the less privilege and hungry people
“That’s what we are doing today here,so we started the exercise six years ago”.he said.
Ogan said the effort was a private sector driven initiative but added “it also involves people in Government because the platform does not recognize any division,we bring everybody together in unity , friendship and brotherhood”he said.
He said the effort will go along way in alleviating hunger especially following the prevailing hunger in the country.
According to him “you know the country is very tough, people are hungry people are starving, there is a whole lot of economic hardship,so for us, this is just our own way of reaching out, our own social contribution to what is very difficult”he said.
Over eleven thousand persons were fed in the just concluded exercise.
Areas of coverage include, Isaac Boro park, Port Harcourt prison/Macoba, Borokiri/Enugu waterside Bundu areas Waterlines and others.
Some of the beneficiaries including an 80 years old widow commended the movement for the annual programm and urged other organizations to emulate them
