B’Ball:Nigerian Teams Record Mixed Fortunes In Serbia
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Nigeria in their third group match at the ongoing World School Basketball Championships holding in Serbia over the weekend.
Bishop Dimieari Grammar School (the boy’s team) suffered their second consecutive loss falling to Turkey 52 to 83 in four sets (13-23, 17-24, 11-22, 11-14). John Wilberforce was the star player of the match, trying his best to rescue the match as he single-handedly scored 23 points, two assists and four rebounds.
The boys are in danger of crashing out of the tournament as they have lost two matches back-to-back. The outcome of the Chinese Taipei and Hungary match will determine their next opponents.
St Jude’s Girls Secondary School (the girl’s team), however, gave the country hope of still winning a medal, as they bounced back from their second group match loss to Bulgaria with an emphatic win. They defeated Chile 68 to 23 in four sets (17-10, 23-6, 16-7, 12-5).
Wandoo Hembam was the star player for the girls, scoring 18 points while Patience John also showed her mettle, scoring 15 points for the team, putting them back in the lead in the group standings.
