Sports Commissioner Wants Female Basketball Team In Rivers
Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Barr. Christopher Green, has charged the management of Royal Hoopers basketball team to form a female basketball team that will represent the state in competitions.
He stated that Rivers State Government wants to form a female basketball team because it is gender-friendly, adding that the governnent of Bar.r Nyesom Wike is an all inclusive government.
Barr. Green said this on Sunday while briefing sports journalists shortly after the final game of the first edition of Giving Back to the society basketball competition in Port Harcourt.
“As a matter of urgency I have charged the Head coach of Royal Hoopers basketball team to form a female basketball team.
“We want to have a female basketball team because our government is gender friendly and we would want to give women the platform and opportunity to explore and showcase their talent in the game” Barr. Green said.
The competition which was sponsored by Precious Achiuwa, who plays basketball with the Toronto Raptors in America saw Olunimi Tiger basketball team winning the final game after they defeated Okirika Warriors 85-74 points.
The commissioner expressed joy for Precious Achiuwa for sponsoring the competition in the state, adding that Achiuwa had brought basketball back to life in the home of basketball.
“I think I am happy he has brought basketball to a life, this is the home town of basketball in Rivers State.
“Giving Back to the society Achiuwa is wonderful, very good example for him.
“He can be better than this, so I want to thank him on behalf of the Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike, PoS Africa.
“I want to thank Achiuwa for this wonderful gesture” he stated.
He disclosed that, there is going to be a basketball clinic coming up in the state where some players discovered in the clinic will be given free scholarship to play basketball in the United States of America.
