…Announces Refurbishment of Rivers Hoopers Camp
Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barr. Christopher Green has announced the immediate commencement of the refurbishment of the Rivers Hooopers basketball club camp in Port Harcourt.
He expressed shock at the state of facilities at the camp, noting that it was in a dreadful state of dilapidation.
This was contained in a press release made available to the Tidesports on Monday, signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Commissioner of Sports, Sammy Wejinya in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner then expressed his gratitude to the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for making it possible for the affected players and officials of Rivers Hoopers to enjoy a new lease of life.
He stated that the need for the refurbishment followed his recent visit to the camp.
“I was left in a state of shock when I saw how unkempt and dilapidated the Rivers Hoopers camp was,” Barrister Green explained.
“The place (camp) was not habitable at all and represented a health hazard. I knew we had to take action immediately.
“Incidentally, the Rivers State Sports Council also have their offices at the same premises as the Hoopers and the situation is obviously the same.
“I have directed that Council be relocated to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium and this will take immediate effect.
“We are going to use the overhead that has been provided by the State Governor to renovate the place for the Rivers Hoopers, as well as the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium offices for the staff to relocate.
“We want to thank his Excellency, the Governor of the State for providing the overhead to aid us on this development.
“As a ministry, we are committed to ensuring that funds meant for particular purposes are effectively and efficiently utilised.
“Everyone knows we (Rivers State) have the best Governor in Nigeria, who will stop at nothing in ensuring that the welfare of every Rivers man and woman is top priority.
“Everyone is very happy and thankful to the Governor. The team has also vowed to give their best,” he stated.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
