Blame FG For Education Decay, RSG Tells Labour
The Rivers State Government says current decay in tertiary institution should be blamed on the Federal Government.
Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. George Nwaeke, made the observation while addressing members of the Nigeria Labour Congress on a solidarity protest for ASUU yesterday in Port Harcourt.
Nwaeke decried the slide in the quality of graduates, recalling that before now Nigerian graduates were sought world over.
The current situation, Nweke said, was a result of neglect and poor funding.
However, he noted that in Rivers State, “under the Wike administration, the government is giving maximum attention and funding to the four state-owned high institutions – two universities and two polytechnics”.
“This situation has kept these schools away from strike over the years”, he said.
The Permanent Secretary commended NLC for the solidarity protest, saying it shows that labour is united and displays brotherhood for affiliate unions.
Promising to forward the letter of demand presented by NLC Chairperson, Comrade Beatrice Itubo, to the appropriate authorities, Nwaeke gave the union kudos for the way it has conducted itself without rancour or violence.
On her part, Rivers State NLC chairperson, Comrade Itubo, said the protest was in solidarity with ASUU over the protracted strike.
She hinted that after the protest, the NLC will study the situation and may embark on solidarity warning strike if the Federal Government fails to negotiate.
She urged all labour unions to be on the alert as NLC would not allow things to continue decaying in the country.
