Wenike-Briggs Emerges YPP Guber Candidate, Promises Unity
As all political parties in Rivers State seem to have narrowed their choice for governorship candidates to the riverine area of the state, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has followed suit, by producing, Engr Danagogo Wenike-Briggs as its party flagbearer for the 2023 Governorship election.
Declaring Wenike-Briggs as the party’s guber candidate, the Returning Officer, Mr Ekpobari Martin Gani, said the aspirant met all legal and other requirements of the party, hence, his emergence as the flag bearer.
Gani, who spoke with news at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt at the weekend, said the candidate emerged via a voice vote.
He explained that the decision for the voice vote was due to the sole aspirantship recorded by the party.
According to him, “the 130 delegates drawn from the 23 local government areas of the State, were ready for the business of the day, before the decision for a voice vote was reached”.
In his acceptance speech, Wenike-Briggs, who is a Deacon in Salvation Ministries, said he will unite the State for greater heights.
He noted that his government “will ensure that all Ministries, parastatals, and agencies of government function better in order to enthrone peaceful environment that will ursher in development”.
The YPP guber candidate stated that employment, education and entrepreneurship will top the agenda of his administration, should he emerge as the State’s number one citizen next year.
Wenike-Briggs is the first grand son of a former First Republic Parliamentarian, Chief Wenike -Briggs, who was the General Secretary of Calabar, Ogoja and Rivers (COR) State Movement.
The late Wenike-Broggs is one of the many voices that influenced Yakubu Gowon in creating new 12 States, including the old Rivers State on May 27, 1967.
He was a former Minister of Education and also Minister for Trade and Commerce between 1967 – 1974 under the General Yakubu Gowon administration.
In his response, the YPP State Chairman, Prince Harry Omangima, said that Wenike-Briggs path has been prepared to take over power come next year.
Omangima said his conviction was informed based on the army of young mentally progressive and innovative servant leaders of the party.
He called for support from all in the State to enable the party “actualise its dream of turning things around the better in the State.”
