Institute Tasks A’Ibom On Regional Planning Law
The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Akwa Ibom Chapter, has called on Akwa Ibom State Government to understand the needs to sign the urban and regional planning law which is still awaiting his assent.
The chairman of Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Akwa Ibom State, TPL Dr Emmanuel .O . Etuk, made the call at the mandatory continuing planning development programme In Uyo.
The chairman said they took the initiative of sponsoring the proposed Akwa Ibom State Urban and Regional Planning Law (Federal Law Decree No.88) as a private bill at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, while the house passed the bill in the year 2019. However the bill is pending in His Excellency’s assent at the office of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.According to him, the bill, when finally assented to, will give comprehensive legal backing for all physical development activities in the state.
The chapter therefore, appeals to the commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Mr Iniobong Edward Ekong, to use his position to secure His Excellency’s approval for the said law.
The chairman noted that approval if granted, will enable town planning profession and the supervising ministry of lands and water resource to have its place in the political and developmental arrangement in the state.
Mr Emmanuel advised his members to exercise patience and believe that the government would look into the issue and give approval for the benefit of the profession. He commended town planners for their massive turnout to deliberate issues affecting the profession and the way forward for effective service delivery across the country.
